Rethinking Prague German Literature. New research approaches in the light of current theories

KOMPARATISTIKA V POHYBU, možnosti, perspektivy a přesahy v současném zkoumání literatury.
The lecture will present a redefinition of Prague German literature. Its common understanding goes back to both conferences
in Liblice, the first one about Kafka (1963), the second one about the very Prague German literature (1965), and consisted mainly
in the attribution of a threefold ghetto in which their authors have lived (as Jews among Christians, as Germans among Czechs
and as social superiors among people who stood lower on the social ladder). This hard demarcation was accompanied by the thesis
of a radical otherness of humanistic Prague German literature in comparison with the chauvinist and nationalist Sudeten German
literature – as well as the claim that the authors of the Prague German literature had no contact with the Czech-writing authors
of their time. All these descriptions were proved inappropriate by historians in the meantime. Therefore a necessary redefinition
of Prague German literature has to be done in the light of new theoretical paradigms such as cultural studies, the spatial turn and
new theories of interculturality which the lecture will show in their potential of rethinking Prague German Literature.
