Kierkegaard's attack on reason goes so far as to embrace paradoxes. At the very beginning of his Either/Or, in the Preface, Kierkegaard confesses that some of the claims made in the book are downright contradictory, but then he writes that he does not see any reason to resolve the contradictions. This is more than a mere confession, for it shows that his whole philosophy is founded upon irrationality. The purpose of this lecture is to show how we can reconcile various themes (such as irony, responsibility, paradox, love, faith, and reason) in Kierkegaard's philosophy; and the best place to explore these themes is the ethical stage where irrationality plays a crucial role.
